Methane Removal Governance Roundtable
Methane emissions from human activities account for around 30% (~0.5 °C) of warming since preindustrial times and are a major contributor to air pollution.
While known mitigation strategies could deliver near-immediate climate and health benefits, hard-to-abate sources, warming-induced natural emissions, and shifts in methane sinks suggest that mitigation alone may not be sufficient — making methane removal an increasingly important area of scientific investigation. The law, policy, and governance questions raised by methane removal, however, remain underexplored.
This expert roundtable will bring together a curated group of researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to clarify the most pressing governance needs, identify gaps requiring further work, and consider how law and policy can support responsible research and informed decision-making.
The discussion will be held under the Chatham House Rule to encourage candid exchange among participants.
This event is convened by the UCLA Earth System Interventions Law and Policy Project and Spark Climate Solutions.
