ACM Austin Special Workshop: The A to Z of Building AI Agents with MongoDB
Facilitator: Alejandro Mancilla, MongoDB
AI agents are quickly becoming a baseline for modern AI applications. Join us for a highly practical, instructor-led workshop on building AI agents, in partnership with MongoDB.
In this hands-on session, you will learn core concepts such as reasoning, tools, and memory, and explore various agent architectures. By the end of the evening, you will have built a functional, AI-powered technical documentation assistant using MongoDB and LangGraph.
The agent you build will utilize MongoDB as its memory and knowledge store, rely on a supported model (such as Claude, Gemini, or GPT) for its "brain," and use LangGraph to orchestrate the end-to-end workflow.
Food & Networking
Come hungry! We will kick the evening off with a full Mexican catering spread featuring tacos and burritos. We will have plenty of excellent vegetarian options available so everyone is fueled up before we dive into the technical content.
What You Will Learn
Understand foundational AI agent concepts, including orchestration, reasoning, tools, and memory.
Explore common AI agent use cases alongside different agent architecture patterns.
Build your own AI-powered technical documentation assistant using LangGraph and MongoDB.
Learn how to effectively use MongoDB as a vector store, knowledge store, and memory provider for agentic applications.
Understand patterns for more reliable and controllable workflows by adding memory to an AI agent.
Prerequisites & Requirements
Bring Your Own Laptop: A laptop is strictly required to participate in the hands-on exercises. The venue will have Wi-Fi available so you can easily follow along.
Environment Access: You must be able to access Instruqt and a browser-based workshop environment.
Experience: Basic familiarity with Python and Jupyter Notebooks is highly recommended, though not required.
Event Agenda
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM | Food & Networking: Grab some food, settle in, and connect with fellow attendees.
6:30 PM – 6:40 PM | Welcome and Setup: Introductions, goals for the workshop, participant setup, and access checks.
6:40 PM – 7:05 PM | Agent Foundations: A dive into agent use cases, architecture patterns, reasoning, tools, and memory.
7:05 PM – 8:00 PM | Guided Hands-On Build: Building the technical documentation assistant using LangGraph, Jupyter Notebooks, a supported LLM, and MongoDB.
8:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Wrap Up: A review of key concepts, next steps, and Q&A.
Earn Your Skill Badge
Attendees will be invited to test their learning at the end of the session to complete the AI Agents with MongoDB Skill Badge. This provides a shareable credential that you can showcase on LinkedIn and other professional platforms. Workshop resources will remain available for self-paced learning after the event so you can finish any incomplete exercises.
I can't wait to see you all there!
