A Case of Mistaken Identity - The Cost of Beauty Defined by the Media (and What to Do About It)
We’re hosting our next Women Productivity Group Speaker Series. Pleased to welcome our speaker, Amanda, from Stanford University School of Medicine.
A Case of Mistaken Identity - The Cost of Beauty Defined by the Media (and What to Do About It)
From a young age, we absorb ideas about what we should look like and what makes us “enough.” Most of it feels normal, until it doesn’t.
In this session, we explore how media and cultural narratives shape identity and self-worth and how we can begin to step outside those patterns.
A moment to pause, reflect, and rethink what you’ve been measuring yourself against.
Who should come
• Women interested in self-growth and identity
• Anyone navigating self-worth in a media-driven world
• Those looking to better understand how external influences shape how we see ourselves
What to expect
• A thoughtful talk
• Open discussion and shared reflections
• A guided goal check-in to reflect and reset for the week
Our Speaker
Amanda Devine works as an Administrative Associate at Stanford University’s School of Medicine while pursuing art and storytelling outside of the office. She is interested in creating more authentic, human-centered spaces through the way we communicate and connect. Her work explores our relationship to the media we consume and the winding path to cultivating body liberation for everyone.
In this talk, Amanda explores how media and cultural narratives shape the way women define their identity and self-worth. Through a combination of research and personal storytelling, she examines the cost of internalizing narrow beauty standards and invites the audience to question the ideals they measure themselves against. She offers a more expansive vision of identity - one that moves beyond appearance and toward a more liberating and self-defined way of living.
