​NoCo's Peer Wisdom Series presents: "Attunement & Harmonizing: Metaphors for Music & Cognition" by Ross Hackenmiller

​Join us for a philosophical talk exploring metaphors derived from musical experience. Musical metaphors are ubiquitous in colloquial language (e.g., "I resonate with that," "It's not quite my vibe," etc...) but do they mean anything beyond the surface level?

​Drawing on examples from music, cognitive science, and physics, Ross will discuss how certain musical metaphors- especially the terms "attunement" and "harmonizing"- point to cognitive strategies that underly music perception as well as applications for lived experience in general.

​About the presenter:
Ross Hackenmiller is a music facilitator, teacher, and improviser who leads freeform, participatory music sessions and teaches improvisational techniques. He has facilitated public music-making at large-scale, community events across the Twin Cities, including Northern Spark Art Festival, Minneapolis Open Streets, and Grand Old Day. His work explores the intersections of music, creativity, neurology, and spirituality, creating inclusive opportunities for people of all skill levels to engage in interactive art and music experiences.
