Can We Build the Next Virtual Patient?
AfroTech edition of Evening rounds.
What would it take to simulate a patient well enough to change how we train, test, research and deliver care?
This edition of Evening Rounds explores digital twin technology in healthcare: how it is being used today, where it could meaningfully improve patient outcomes, and what would have to be true for virtual representations of patients to become useful in real-world care.
What if we could test a treatment on a virtual version of you before treating you?
Across healthcare, researchers are building increasingly sophisticated digital representations of patients — models that can potentially simulate physiology, disease progression, treatment response, and other aspects of health and care.
They’re often called digital twins.
But the ambition behind the idea is much bigger than simply creating a digital model of a person. Could we use these models to compare treatments before choosing one? Anticipate how disease might progress? Test medical devices and care pathways? Train clinicians against realistic patient scenarios? Or explore interventions before exposing real patients to them?
And if so, how accurate does a virtual patient need to be before we should trust what it tells us?
How much of a human being can we actually simulate — and how good would that simulation need to be before anyone should make decisions with it?
For this special AfroTech Week edition of Evening Rounds, we're asking:
Can We Build the Next Virtual Patient?
We’ll explore where digital twins in healthcare are real today, where the field may be headed, and what would have to be true for virtual patients to become genuinely useful in research, product development, clinical training, and care.
What to expect.
Expect a short framing, provocative examples, structured conversation, and an opportunity to help us collectively sketch what the next generation of virtual patients might actually require.
Who should come
Clinicians, health tech and med-tech builders, AI practitioners, researchers, designers, students, investors, health-system leaders — and anyone curious about where healthcare is headed.
No AfroTech badge required. This is an independent Evening Rounds gathering taking place during AfroTech Week and is open to the broader Houston community.
About Evening Rounds
Evening Rounds is a healthcare discovery series from Stitium 37 exploring
What is becoming possible × what care actually needs × how we translate one into the other.
Each inquiry begins with a consequential change in healthcare. We examine the capabilities emerging from that change, investigate the realities of care they may intersect with, and ultimately ask where meaningful capability–need fit—and new opportunities for innovation—exist.
About Stitium 37
Stitium 37 is a healthcare innovation studio helping healthcare ideas, products, and ventures become credible, usable, viable, and ready for real-world adoption.
Its work sits at the intersection of clinical insight, emerging technology, product development, evidence, workflow, market entry, and implementation.
