Life can go off course. So can cinema.

This Wednesday (7/29) at 7:00 PM, we'll continue our Cinéma Vérité / Direct Cinema series with a documentary classic that famously goes completely off the rails during its own making.

Made in 1986, the film began as a serious historical documentary exploring the lasting impact of General Sherman's Civil War campaign through the American South. However, during production, the director experienced a painful breakup, prompting him to shift the camera away from history and toward his own inner life and the women he encountered along the way.

The finished film bears little resemblance to its original concept. Instead of a conventional historical documentary, it becomes a deeply personal first-person film infused with humor, self-deprecation, and absurdity. The director also served as writer, cinematographer, editor, and protagonist, while everyone appearing in the film plays themselves.

The film won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and was selected for preservation by the U.S. Library of Congress in 2000. It is widely regarded as one of the landmark works in documentary cinema.
