Upshur Community Garden Open House + Volunteer Opportunity
Everyone is welcome to Open House at Upshur Community Garden, presented at DC Climate Week. Observe, ask questions, and volunteer alongside gardeners as they prepare soil for spring, pull weeds, and talk urban, organic gardening, mutual food aid, and composting. Urban gardens mitigate climate change in many ways. All ages welcome.
Follow the path beside the soccer field across from Powell Elementary School and enter through the garden gates. Please bring gloves, a bottle of water, and wear long sleeves & pants if you plan to volunteer.
Drop-ins welcome. Stay for a few minutes or the full time. Optional volunteer tasks may include weeding, digging, picking up trash, planting seeds, tidying, and pruning.

MORE EVENT DETAILS
At about 11am I/Wes will give a short talk and demo on cover crop management i.e. what to do this spring with the cover crops you planted the fall before.
The following is a list of work day tasks we will be focused on:
Invasive species removal - Japanese knotweed
Japanese knotweed started showing up in the garden near the pavilion a couple years ago, spreading to the garden from the park. Its incredibly invasive and spreads via seed and underground through a horizontal root system. And I'm hoping we can prevent it from spreading further into the garden.
Dig it up and put it in the metal trash can next to the straw shed - do not ever put it in the compost pile in the back.
Prepare communal/gleaning plots for planting
Cut cover crop, rake up green manure (cover crop), turn over soil, place green manure back on top
Weed and water communal/gleaning potatoes and onions
Pile up organic matter/compost pile in the back
Pick up trash
Empty trash cans and place near trash can in the park
Clean gutters on stairs (lift out grates and clean debris out)
Weed Asparagus
Mow communal areas
Don't forget to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Other suggestions for what to bring:
Garden gloves
Sun protection
Rain protection as needed
Clothing: Garden work may involve weeding, trimming, carrying mulch. Some people choose to wear long pants, long sleeves and closed-toe shoes and hats. This is your choice.
Weather: Weather may be sunny. Even cloudy days can have strong UV. Weather may be rainy or drizzly. Workdays take place rain or shine.
