Hip Hop History Through the Art of Sampling
I'm Umer (He/Him/His), a full time teacher by day, artist and hip hop nerd by 24/7. The reason I fell in love with hip hop is it's ability to transcend across generations through sounds and storytelling. The music in itself acts like a time capsule for a special culture and gateway to the music of the current and the past.
In this workshop, we will dive into the historical context that hip hop came up in, specifically from a production and beatmaking perspective. We will explore the creative art of sampling in hip hop through producers and artists starting from DJ Kool Herc all the way to A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Knxwledge, Kendrick Lamar, and many more!
Bring your favorite hip hop vinyl or CD to share and discuss at the end!
This workshop helps raise funds for the Here Clubhouse, a volunteer-run community space in K-Town! All proceeds go towards keeping the lights on for the space.
