Textures & Markmaking
Ready to unlock more creative possibilities with your Gelli plate?
After a quick refresher on applying paint, we’ll explore the surprising variety of everyday materials you can use to create rich textures and expressive marks. Bring along textured items from home that you don’t mind getting paint on and follow a series of hands-on exercises designed to help you capture exciting patterns, build visual interest, and develop your own unique markmaking style.
Join me live for this 90-minute class, experiment freely, and get answers to your questions in the chat as we create together.
Beginners welcome.
While you should bring items that are unique to what you have at home, I will be demoing some exercises using the following if you want to follow along:
a plastic keycard or a stiffer piece of folded up paper
plastic cling wrap
dental floss or yarn or string
If you don't have the above items, don't worry! You can do all of the exercises with whatever you bring: Think anything you don't mind getting paint on that isn't sharp.
materials needed:
a gelli plate (I use a 5 x 7 or 8 x 10 plate.) Please DO NOT use a Speedball Gel Plate.
an assortment of acrylic paint. I like Amsterdam in a variety of transparent and opaque colors. Bring colors that make you happy! (No "open" paint due to long drying time.)
a SOFT rubber brayer.
Printer paper is the best paper to use when learning.
A magazine or art journal to offload extra paint.
baby wipes or a rag / paper towel and canola oil to clean your plate.
washi tape or masking tape or blue tape
optional: gloves, if you don't want to get your hands dirty.
