Building Powerful CLIs with Go
CLIs with Go and 12-Factor App Methodology
Imagine if you had to import entire packages, just to perform some basic Kubernetes operations? Or having to manually work with the wildly undocumented Rclone library, just to copy one file to an S3 bucket? That would be a huge pain! Fortunately most of us don’t experience that, because of powerful CLI tools that abstract the heavy lifting. The more abstraction however, the more functionality a CLI needs to pack, and that introduces a common growing pain — complexity.
There is just no way around it sometimes, but with the right approach, complexity ain’t always so bad! For over 14 years, developers and ops teams have utilized the 12-Factor App methodology to resolve this growing pain. In just about any activity, from sports, to art work, to programming ― The best in the game are the ones who master the basics. Without the fundamentals of the 12-Factor App, we literally wouldn't have modern-day paradigms like “cloud native.”
What are we doing?
Join us and our special guest, Ruckus Voxi, Senior Developer Advocate at Akamai, for a fun hands-on session of building CLIs in Go. While reflecting on the twelve factors, we'll be using the same libraries (Cobra and Viper) used to build the CLIs of many popular open source projects. Hugo, GitHub CLI, Docker, and Kubernetes to name a few.
