Indigo Community Dye Bath
Dye a garment from your wardrobe with living blue of the Mexican highlands.
Step into the rhythmic, ancient practice of Indigo dyeing during a morning session. For this special community gathering, our vats will be infused with Indigofera suffruticosa, sourced directly from traditional artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico. Unlike other botanical dyes, Indigo is a living, breathing vat that requires no mordant and a unique "dip and oxidize" process to reveal its depth.
We will gather to wake up the vats, watching as the fabric emerges from the liquid a startling lime green, only to transform into a rich, resonant blue as it meets the air. This is a communal ritual of patience and transformation.
The Color: A spectrum of blues, from the pale sky blue in the first dip to the deep ocean blue.
The Process: We will guide you through the proper dipping and aeration techniques to ensure your color is vibrant and permanent. There is no mordant needed for our process.
What to bring: 1 small-to-medium plant fiber garment (cotton, linen, hemp). Example garments: A button up shirt, lightweight dress or vest. Do not bring heavy jackets or bedding. Light-colored or white pieces work best, but the indigo will over dye any color.
Please wear clothing you don't mind getting a little indigo on, water, sun protection & an open mind.
