Literary Salon: Writing Outside Our Mother Tongue
What does it mean to live, think, and write between languages?
Outside Our Mother Tongue is an intimate literary salon bringing together writers and readers who navigate the space between languages, cultures, and identities.
Over bites and wine paired especially for the evening, we’ll explore our relationships with language—the struggles and joys of writing and reading between languages, what gets lost (or found) in translation, the memories we associate with each tongue, and the bits and pieces of ourselves that seem to change depending on the language we speak.
Through personal conversations, writing prompts, and short readings, we’ll reflect on how language shapes the way we express ourselves and understand the world.
We’ll gather at KRU, an award-winning Thai restaurant in Brooklyn that reimagines 100-year-old Thai recipes for contemporary New York. Much like writing between languages, KRU’s cooking is about carrying traditions with us while finding new ways to express them.
Whether you’re a writer creating outside of your mother tongue, a reader of literature in multiple languages, or simply someone fascinated by the relationship between language and identity, there’s a seat for you at the table. I can’t wait to meet you all :)
*Tickets include bites and one complimentary glass of wine, with additional glasses available for purchase. All tickets are non-refundable.
If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know when you register so KRU can do their best to accommodate you.
With love, Pam
