About Event

Do you enjoy choose-your-own-adventure games and/or books? Have you ever thought about making your own? Then come learn about the world of interactive fiction and create your own interactive fiction in the free game engine Twine.

What is Interactive Fiction?
Interactive fiction started as text-based games where the reader / player chooses their path through the story, like the classic Zork. The genre now includes visual novels, point and click adventures, and LitRPGs.

Here are some games with inspiration for the class!

How do you make Interactive Fiction?
We'll be using Twine, a story editor that can help you organize your scenes, choices, and how to link them together! It's a mix of word editing and macro-based coding, but don't worry, it's not like computer code!

We'll introduce you to some examples in Twine and teach you the basics of the game engine.

What if I've never written anything like that?
Not a problem! This is a beginner-friendly class, so we're going to focus on teaching narrative concepts. As an example, we'll help you structure your story's choices, write out potential branches, and hone your descriptive style.

By the end of this workshop, you will have a small, branching game that you can upload to your own personal website or to the free indie game platform itch.io!

All you need is a computer with a keyboard that can get on the internet.
