π Ruby on Waves #1
β
βπ What is Ruby on Waves
βWe have a small Ruby community going on here in Ericeira near the ποΈ beach!
βWe often hang out and get together to cowork and of course we always end up sharing ideas and talking Rails, so we thought it'd be a good idea to see if there's more people around like us that'd be interested in meeting up!
βThe goal with Ruby on Waves is to get together Rubyists from around Lisbon and give ourselves a good excuse to spend some time together in a really nice and chill location and make new friends!
βThis is our first meetup: we're starting things small so we're doing an informal, small get together to make new Ruby friends and talk Rails.
βWeβll be with our laptops and talk about Ruby, maybe share cool stuff we've learned recently etc.
The location we'll be in offers great coffee, beer, and food with both an indoor & outdoor space.

ββοΈ How to get to Ericeira
βEriceira is a π surf town ~35km NW of Lisbon. Very well connected with the city:
βπ Car: Ericeira is a ~40 minute car ride from Lisbon via A8 + A21. Good roads, total toll amounts ~4 EUR.
π Uber or Bolt: ~35 EUR. Easiest option if you don't have a car. Plenty of Ubers available: we've never had any trouble getting from or to Lisbon at any hour.
π Bus: ~5 EUR, ~45 min. Line number 2801. Buses depart from Campo Grande in Lisbon and arrive in the Ericeira bus station. Ericeira is a small town so many things are within walking distance of the bus station, but local Ubers or Bolt drivers are also plenty available at any time to drive you around town (4-5 EUR local rides usually)
Carris bus line 2801 timetable: https://www.carrismetropolitana.pt/lines/2801?active_pattern_id=2801_0_2&active_waypoint_stop_id=060312&active_waypoint_stop_sequence=0
Note on buses: 2801 is the only GOOD line. It's a express line that goes through the highway exactly like a Uber would do, and thus it takes roughly the same time to arrive than a private car. There are other bus lines like 2803 that also go from Lisbon to Ericeira but they have many stops along the way and take way longer, like 1h30min.

βπ¨ Where to stay in Ericeira
βEriceira is a beautiful oceanside town! Thousands of people come here every year for tourism, surfing, or nomading. Ruby on Waves can be a good opportunity to come visit and stay a for a day or two to discover Ericeira.
βWhere to stay depends mostly on your vibe and budget. Some good options:
βAirbnb: the town is full of them, any price range
βSelina Boavista: ~60-100+ EUR / night, nomad backpacker kind of place
βReserva FLH: ~130 EUR / night, mid-tier option
βYou And The Sea: ~200 EUR / night, high end
β
βπ What to do in Ericeira
βIf you come and want to spend a bit of time here, there are A LOT of things to do!
βFor starters, Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve and consistently considered one of the best places in the world to surf. If catching waves is your thing, or you're curious about it and want to take your first lesson, you'll find PLENTY of surf schools to do it! Very affordable too, like 30-50 EUR total for a few hours with wetsuit rental and everything.
βOther than surf, there are many good restaurants with such a high quality that you'd only expect them from big cities. There's also nature, cafes with coworking area, live music, pubs, parties, locally brewed beer, beaches, sports... Again, this depends mostly on your vibe and budget, but since everyone likes restaurants some good options are:
βMar das Latas: perfect for dinner and sunset
βLAB: crazy good food, comfort food + modern fusion kinda
βCosta Fria: another modern / fusion vibe
βEsplanada Furnas: best fish I've ever had
βVilla Brunch Cafe: good brunch
βBalagan: cafe + restaurant, good spot in front of the beach
