Book Club - Day of the Oprichnik by Vladimir Sorokin (Austin, ATX)
Join Subculture Lit Book Club with East Austin Writing Project to discuss Day of the Oprichnik by Vladimir Sorokin
About
Vladimir Sorokin’s Day of the Oprichnik takes place in Moscow in 2028. We see this futuristic New Russia through the eyes of Andrei Danilovich Komiaga, one of the czar’s most trusted courtiers, and one of the country’s most feared men. Information is delivered in news bubbles. The monarchy derives their power from God. Andrei witnesses and participates in executions, drug fueled parties, and extortion. He cries to songs of his homeland and falls in love. This relentless portrait of a troubled empire is one of Sorokin’s best: funny, inventive, and richly imagined.
