Produced water (PW) can often be a highly variable, complex mixture composed of formation elements, hydrocarbons, and downhole production chemicals. Since water is a valuable resource, PW is viewed as a potential source. However, its toxicity/hazardous characteristics must be understood prior to treatment and consideration in beneficial reuse programs. This presentation uses environmental risk assessment and toxicology principles to examine PW in context of identifying key risk drivers with the objective of demonstrating the application of a systematic approach for the standardization of the overall screening process.

Andrew Pawlisz, D.A.B.T., is a board-certified toxicologist with more than 30 years of experience in environmental consulting, industry, and government. His expertise includes human health and ecological risk assessment, PFAS and other emerging contaminants, regulatory compliance, environmental remediation, emergency response, and risk communication. He has supported complex projects for private industry and federal agencies, including the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, and has worked extensively under programs such as TSCA,CERCLA, RCRA, and the Clean Water Act. Andrew is also an experienced technical leader, author, presenter, and peer reviewer whose work has helped organizations develop science-based solutions to environmental and public health challenges.
