Flooding is one of the most damaging physical climate hazards, and the most complex natural peril for numeric modeling.
Floodings occur hundreds and even thousands of miles away from the places where rainfall occurs or snow melts. Small rivers feed into larger rivers, and depending on soil type, geographic specifics, and vegetation amount along the way, more or less water is retained before reaching downstream areas.
Flood depth can vary a lot between neighbouring buildings. By comparison, droughts and heatwaves are the same between neighbouring buildings, and even between neighbouring cities!
Modeling droughts, heatwaves and wildfires - it's generally less technical, and doesn't require as much hydrological and terrain data.
During this workshop session we’ll cover:
How should flood data be used to assess physical damage and business interruption, and why are different types of data required?
Why does it make sense to aggregate detailed flood data over a larger area rather than focusing on the asset itself?
How different resolutions look like: 10 m vs 100 m?
Examples of flood damage functions for real estate and infrastructure assets
How to assess flood risk for a large number of physical assets, facilities and properties?
Which flood adaptation options exist?
How to integrate physical climate hazard assessments into a practical risk management strategy?
