Planning a multi-day sailing trip usually means 50 open browser tabs, mentally overlaying a NOAA tide graph onto a forum post from 2018Planning a multi-day sailing trip usually means 50 open browser tabs, mentally overlaying a NOAA tide graph onto a forum post from 2018 to figure out if you'll be safe at anchor. What if an agent could do that correlation for you?

In this Vibe Check, Melanie and Tim Conley, Senior Software Engineer at Temporal, are joined by Terrance Ryan, Developer Relations Manager at Google, to go under the hood of NavalPlan, a trip planning app built with Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK). Terrance will walk through how he built "Virtual Harbourmasters" that combine hard data from APIs like NOAA with soft reasoning from Gemini to handle the kind of planning that traditional apps can't touch.

We'll dig into the hybrid agent pattern: when to use deterministic tools for objective data like tides, weather, and sun, and when to hand off to an LLM for qualitative research like local knowledge, hazards, and hidden gems. This isn't a chatbot wrapper. It's a real application solving a real correlation problem. And the timing couldn't be better: Temporal is about to launch our own ADK integration, so we're paying close attention to how builders are putting ADK to work in production.
