About Event

What are the technical challenges that will shape the next generation of artificial intelligence, and where are the opportunities for academic research to make a difference?

Dr. Eric Davis, Program Manager in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Strategic Technologies Office, will discuss how DARPA is approaching these questions across artificial intelligence, cognitive science, data science, and human-machine teaming. He will begin with a brief overview of DARPA’s mission and how academic researchers can engage with the agency, before turning to the technical challenges driving DARPA’s current AI portfolio.

Dr. Davis will discuss recent work from a theoretical perspective, what DARPA is learning about the capabilities and limitations of current AI/ML approaches, and how the agency is thinking about shaping the future of AI research. The talk will offer a view into how DARPA identifies high-risk, high-payoff research opportunities and translates advances in fundamental research into new capabilities.

Please note - the talk will take place in Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall.
