Mapping Memories: Creative Workshop
More than just a place of locations, Joburg is a receptacle for the memories of millions of people. Hosted by writer Cate Otto (University of Johannesburg) and graphic designer Rozina Vavetsi (New York Institute of Technology and University of Johannesburg), ‘Mapping Memories’ is an interactive exhibition and creative workshop designed to explore and map our most vivid memories of the city. Our exhibition invites passers-by to interact with a large-scale map of the city by ‘mapping’ their memories using the provided materials. In our accompanying workshop, we further explore our memories by combining the arts of writing, design, and collage-making to delve into the textures, tastes, smells, colours, and sounds of remembrance. Through this activation, we aim to create a collective and evolving portrait of the city’s identity and encourage participants to reflect and connect through the power of shared memory.
