On Wednesday, Oct 21st, from 18:30 to 20:30 at UPF Campus de la Ciutadella, AI Safety Barcelona is running an evening of lightning talks where people in our community present something cool they're working on, or have worked on, related to AI safety. Each talk is 4 minutes plus some time for questions, so you'll get to hear a lot of different ideas in a short time.
What will be covered
Lightning talks on a wide mix of AI safety projects
Time to ask questions and talk with the speakers between talks
A short talk on how to work on AI safety projects of your own: finding research positions, doing independent projects or research, and getting from "interested" to "actually building something"
Open time at the end to mingle, swap ideas, and find people to collaborate with
Why come
Get a real picture of the field. Hear what people near you are working on from their own mouths
Find out what's interesting. You may leave with a new favorite problem, a paper to read, or an argument you want to push back on.
Meet people. Barcelona has a growing group of people working on AI safety, and this is an easy way to meet them. There's built-in conversation time, so you won't have to cold-approach anyone.
Pick up practical next steps. If you do want to get involved, the closing talk covers concrete routes in, and you can ask the people who've already taken them.
No prep required. You can simply come, listen, and chat. You don't need to be an expert or to have a project of your own.
Want to present?
If you're working on anything AI safety related, we'd love to have you. It doesn't need to be finished, polished, or groundbreaking. Fill out this brief form: Open Google Form
Presenting is worth it for you and for the community:
You get quick, friendly feedback and fresh perspectives on your work
You may find collaborators, mentors, or people who can point you to resources
Practicing a clear 4-minute explanation is a useful skill, and it's a low-stakes place to try
You help others see what's possible, and make the community feel more concrete and welcoming for newcomers
In the form, include a line or two on what you'd present and what you'd like to get out of it.
Who should attend?
Anyone curious about AI safety, whether you're a student, a professional, a researcher, or just exploring. Some familiarity with the basics helps, but you don't need a deep background. If you're already working on something, we especially encourage you to present.
