About Event

Most startups don’t fail because of product, funding, or strategy - they fail because the founding team breaks down. In fact, 65% of high-potential startups fail due to preventable co-founder conflict.

This workshop gives founders a structured, research-backed playbook to build a healthy, resilient partnership before tensions become breaking points. Whether you’re two technical co-founders, a CEO/CTO pairing, or a multi-founder team navigating rapid growth, this session helps you strengthen the partner side of your venture, not just the business side.

You will leave this session with answers to:

1. How do we build a strong co-founder “operating system”?

A structured approach to alignment on goals, roles, expectations, and communication so your team can move faster with fewer misfires.

2. What conversations are essential early on—and how do we have them without creating tension?

A simple, repeatable framework (“The Social Contract”) that turns hard conversations into collaborative design sessions.

3. How do we prevent conflict before it happens?

Tools for spotting predictable friction points around equity, roles, feedback, decision-making, and stress responses.

4. What do healthy co-founder dynamics actually look like?

Adapted frameworks from the Gottman Institute, and behavioral markers drawn from real case studies of teams backed by YC, Sequoia, First Round, and Antler.

5. How do we maintain trust and momentum as the company grows?

Practical systems for ongoing alignment, feedback rhythms, and recalibrating roles as your startup scales.

About the Speaker

Annie Garofalo is a leading expert on high-stakes business partnership dynamics. With a background in neuroscience, sociology, and organizational behavior (Harvard BA, Stanford MBA/MA), she helps early-stage teams prevent the #1 cause of startup failure: co-founder conflict.

Annie is the founder of Confidante, where she has advised 100+ startups backed by YC, Sequoia, First Round, and Antler. She holds an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School supporting team development for its Biodesign Fellowship, hosts the  How I Met My Cofounder podcast, and writes a newsletter on cofounder health (1.4K+ subscribers). She is also co-authoring the first academic study on co-founder conflict prevention with Stanford and Columbia.

Her frameworks are used in venture programs and university classrooms nationwide, offering founders a structured, research-driven alternative to “premarital counseling for co-founders.”
