True Story Non-Fic Club: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zaumer
** DATE CHANGE: MONDAY SEPTEMBER 14 - if you cant make it, please cancel your RSVP! Thank you!**
Get your tissue boxes ready because we’re reading Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. And yes, you will cry in the grocery store, at home, and in a café. It’s guaranteed.
"In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humour and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother’s particular, high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul.
It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her."
OPTIONAL: To connect with the story, we’ll visit a local Korean grocery store, pick up some picnic snacks, and head over to Christie Pits around 6:30 p.m. Location details will be shared with attendees via WhatsApp chat.
This event is free to attend, but please only register if you plan to attend! :)
