About Event

Biological AI will be built on data that doesn’t exist yet.

Biological AI is intelligence that learns how living systems behave, from a cell in a bioreactor to a cell in a patient. Unlike AlphaFold, which learned from decades of published structures, it has no ready-made dataset at either end. The data that matters is commercial, fragmented or never captured. Models are coming. Data is the bottleneck.

This evening is about who builds it, and how. Early stage founders and builders in biotech, techbio, software, and health, pharma and clinical data leaders, investors, and researchers and academics interested in advancing the bioeconomy. Join us!

What we’ll dig into

  • What data is worth generating? One bioreactor yields roughly 50 runs a year, so every data point has to count. Not more temperature and pressure logs, but causal data that shows what the cell is actually doing.

  • What can clinical and pharma data teach models? Trials and real-world patient data are rich, but built for regulators, not for machine learning.

  • How do we capture data at the source? Instrumenting labs, plants and clinics so data is born AI-ready.

  • How do we share without giving up privacy or the moat? Consent, federated approaches and incentives for pharma, CDMOs, health systems and patients to contribute.

  • Who owns the data foundation? Developers, CDMOs, platforms, patients or shared commons.

  • What do models look like when data is scarce and expensive? Small, rich datasets call for different approaches than internet-scale training.

  • What can software teams bring? Data engineering and tooling from tech, applied to both bioprocess and clinical data.

About the hosts

Planet A Ventures an early-stage European tech VC backing founders solving the world’s greatest challenges. We take a scientific approach to identify breakthrough technologies across bio-economy, energy, infrastructure and manufacturing. Investments include Arsenale, Project Eaden, Aris Machina, Staer, AUAR, Gigaton, traceless, Ineratec and HIVED.

Bits in Bio is the foremost global community building at the intersection of software and science. The community consists of over 12000 members spanning biology, clinical, chemistry, ML, and software engineering across over two dozen cities. We organize meetups, in-depth technical discussions, live online events, Q&As with industry leading figures, hackathons, and convene discussions in a global Slack community to facilitate connections and learning in this space. Our mission is to bring together software enthusiasts and scientists to share knowledge and build tools to empower scientific discovery.
