Blue Carbon and Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR): Navigating Pathways for Ocean Climate Action
Description:
Conservation International, Grantham Environmental Trust, and the Ocean Resilience & Climate Alliance (ORCA), welcome you to attend our Ocean Pavilion event at COP31:
Blue Carbon and mCDR: Navigating Pathways for Ocean Climate Action
The climate crisis demands a full suite of solutions: rapid fossil fuel phaseout, protection and restoration of nature, and responsible innovations to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Blue carbon ecosystems provide immediate, multi-benefit carbon sequestration and storage. Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) pathways could potentially be an important part of efforts to meet climate targets and reach gigaton-scale carbon removal, but require robust research, monitoring, verification, governance, and safeguards before they can be deployed at scale.
Bringing together leaders from science, policy, and finance, this session will explore how blue carbon and high-integrity mCDR could work together as climate solutions and what is needed to maximize their value and integrity.
Speakers will discuss pathways to responsibly scale both approaches, translating ocean-climate commitments into financed, actionable solutions that deliver durable, meaningful climate mitigation.
The panel discussion will be moderated by Aarthi Ananthanarayanan, Global Engagement and Policy Advisor, Carbon to Sea Initiative.
Expert panelists include:
Jennifer Howard, Vice President, Climate Delivery and Integrity, Conservation International
Elizabeth Guinessey, Manager, Food and Blue Carbon Innovation, Verra
Dr. Kalina Grabb, Post-doctoral Researcher, Dalhousie University
Dr. Mariam Swaleh, Technical University of Mombasa and Ocean Climate Innovation Hub Kenya
We welcome you to share this invitation with colleagues and relevant stakeholders and hope you will be able to join us for this important discussion on the future of ocean climate action.
