About Event

Want to make a real change? Let's get a one-year moratorium on data centers passed!

Soapbox Project is Seattle's most joyful community space for climate action. We have weekly dinners in an art gallery on Tuesday nights where we scheme and dream for a better future.

Sometimes, we go on field trips like this one! We're venturing to City Hall to speak out for the energy future we deserve.

If you've never done it before, public comment can feel scary. But it's actually so fun, and reminds you that City Council is just some guy in Keds, and they really DO need to hear from you.

The plan:

  • If you're joining in person, try to arrive by 2:15 so you can sign up.

  • If you're running late in person OR joining virtually, sign up to give remote public comment, You'll need to do this day-of, 15 minutes before the meeting:

  • When you RSVP, you will receive a doc that walks you through how you can prepare talking points for public comment. It can be AS SIMPLE as "hi, my name is Nivi, and I urge you to pass a moratorium on data centers because I want our public spaces to be beneficial to the public, not just tech companies." The talking points sheet has some more detailed stuff on it, but seriously, you can just speak from your heart.

Why should I come to this?

  • When we show our faces to City Council and tell them about Soapbox, they understand that we speak with the voice of the collective

  • Giving public comment is a GREAT SKILL to engage with the civic process

  • Pestering works, this moratorium is likely to pass, and we could really use a win right now

  • Friendship

What if I am reeeaallllyyy not able to join in person or virtually?

  • Email [email protected] and tell them you're with Soapbox (and/or any other climate group of choice like 350 Seattle) + urging them to pass a moratorium!

How will I find Soapbox if I've never met you before?

  • I (Nivi) will be wearing heart-shaped glasses. Also, we will be the ones looking the jolliest and most joyful. You will find us. Especially if you RSVP <333

Location
Seattle City Hall
600 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104, USA
Follow the hella cool waterfall up the stairs into the entrance of the building. Then go up to the next floor where public comment happens. If you're confused, ask the welcome desk! *Be prepared 15 mins early whether you're joining virtually or IRL; it officially starts at 2:30 but we set the start time at 2:15)
