Snowy Plover Habitat Stewards
Join us to learn about the Snowy Plover Habitat Stewards program.
Meet us at the Judah street entrance to Ocean Beach (map link) at 10 am.
We ask all volunteers to bring and manage their own supplies. If you do not have supplies, you are welcome to partner up with another volunteer and share a bucket or borrow supplies from FoSD (with advance notice). As a reminder, please bring the following:
Bucket (example here) to collect trash (we'll probably be picking up mostly smaller items, including bits of plastic)
Trash picker (optional, depending on your needs)
Gloves
Filled water bottle (for hydration); Java Beach cafe, near our meeting spot, offers complimentary water
Sun protection (hat/sunscreen)
Jacket/layers (the weather can change quickly, dress in layers)
The goal of this program is to educate visitors and the community about snowy plovers and other wildlife at Ocean Beach and how to enjoy the area while minimizing disturbances to wildlife and their habitat. We'll set up a spotting scope for folks to view the snowy plovers at a safe distance and will have a field guide on hand with more information.
The plan is to work our way down the beach from Judah to Lawton. We'll then turn back and walk to stairwell 28, where we'll combine the contents of our buckets into a trash bag and leave for pick-up. We'll cover ~ 1 mile.
