About Event

Do you like knitting and/or crochet?
Do you like walking around SF?
Do you love the great parks the city has to offer?

Well, what if you could combine all these things into one event? Look no further, Knitters in the Wild got you.

Join us for a day of walking and knitting at Golden Gate Park!
Whether you do either activity separately or are into combining them (don't worry, we have tips if you're new to knit-walking!), this event allows you to enjoy both with fellow crafting walkers.

We will start the event off at 12 pm on Saturday, September 19th in front of the Conservatory of Flowers on JFK Promenade. Then we will go on our walk through the park. If you are into knit-walking, you'll enjoy some time to get your steps in as well as accomplish some rows on your project!

After our walk, we will end up at the DeYoung Museum Cafe, where we can enjoy some snacks and drinks and do more crafting!

What to bring:

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A bottle of water

  • Hat/sunscreen if it's a sunny day

  • Your project, of course! (Recommendation: bring something portable and doesn't require a lot of pattern referencing, e.g., a stockinette sock or a beanie with a simple stitch pattern)

Tips for staying safe while knitting and walking:

  • Make safety a priority

  • Be aware of your path and surroundings - look up and understand what is going on around you from time to time.

  • Walk on paths that are paved so that you can have a natural gait while knitting

  • Wear comfortable shoes that are broken in so you're not fumbling as you walk

  • Stop walking or stop knitting if you need to focus on one or the other. Doing both poorly can result in mistakes in your knitting and maybe a scuffed knee.

  • It helps to be able to knit without looking (but not a requirement)

  • If you are looking at your knitting while walking, make sure to use your peripheral vision to be aware of what is going on

  • If you need to fix a mistake, it will probably require a bit more attention and brain power - step to the side of the path to be out of the way of others and fix the mistake while standing/not moving

  • The best kind of knitting for this is stockinette in the round, or a very memorable pattern where you don't need to look at it too hard (such as 1x1 ribbing, garter stitch, etc.) - think the body of a top, or a sock leg, or beanie.

  • Complicated patterns/stitches have a risk of resulting in mistakes or needing to stop more often to do the hard bits

  • You'll end up walking slower than normal, which is ok. The point of walking and knitting (to me) is to be outdoors doing something you like and giving you a bit of movement when you'd otherwise be immobile for hours.

  • Carry your yarn in a cross-body bag so the yarn can feed freely into your hands as you work. Another option is a portable yarn holder that slings to your wrist or across your body like this one: https://a.co/d/09mXzNma
