​Get hands-on experience converting forestry slash to valuable biochar at scale!

​About the Training

​​This training is part of the USDA Forest Service funded project: "Building a Biochar Market for Forest and Climate Resilience". More information about the grant opportunity is available here.

​This South Cle Elum event is one of two in-person field training opportunities, the other is scheduled for Sunday November 23rd in Wauconda, Okanogan County.

​​Who should attend

​​This field training has been designed for crews and crew leads interested in providing biochar production and application services to Small Forest Landowners as part of the grant project.

​​Registration requests will be screened; space is limited.

​​Please note: while this training is NOT intended for landowners, a public demonstration will be taking place on the same site between 10:30-2:30 to which all are welcome.

​​What you'll Learn

​We'll be running multiple Ring of Fire Biochar Kilns concurrently, so not only will you get hands-on experience assembling, loading, lighting, fueling, quenching, and disassembling, you'll see what it's like to do so when there are multiple kilns processing slash at the same time.

​ OPTIONAL but highly recommended:

​​Meet your Trainer

​​Eric Mayer - Napachar - Eric is the founder of NapaChar, where he focuses on practical, field-based applications of biochar production and use. At this workshop, he’ll lead the hands-on training for crews, sharing his experience with equipment setup, safe operation, and efficient biochar production in real-world conditions.

​Also on hand...

​​Korina Stark - Circular Spring - Korina is the Principal Investigator for this grant project through Circular Spring and Program Director for Biochar On Site, a community of practice focused on on-site biochar production and application. At this workshop, she’ll answer questions about the grant and facilitate the public demonstration running alongside the crew training.

​Elaine Oneil - CORRIM - Elaine is the Executive Director of CORRIM, where she applies over two decades of experience in life cycle assessment to understanding carbon impacts in forestry and forest products. At this workshop, she’ll share practical approaches to measuring and documenting biochar projects for carbon crediting, drawing on her deep expertise in forest carbon accounting.
