Quantifying Culture

Can culture be measured? Should it be?

Can we quantify organizational or national culture?
Can we measure a society’s collective intelligence?

Not theoretically. Not metaphorically.
Practically. Visibly. Experientially.

This session is the first in a three-part series exploring how culture shapes the way we think, communicate, and collaborate — often without us realizing it.

What you’ll explore

Part 1 — Presentation
We introduce a working definition of culture and unpack how it operates across:

  • Hofstede’s Six Dimensions of National Culture

  • Hall’s theories of time, context, and communication

  • The Lewis Triangle: Linear-Active, Multi-Active, Reactive cultures

  • Language, community size, and the Cultural Adjustment Cycle

  • Why Dunbar’s Number still matters in modern social systems

Part 2 — Workshop - Welcome to "Koh Katara"
You’ve been accepted into a select community of techno optimists a tropical island. You've agreed to live on the island for 6 months with 60 other people. What could go wrong?

This session you will be matched into small groups with your "cultural opposites".

Together, you’ll explore:

  • Power distance, hierarchy, and trust

  • Time, interruption, silence, and decision-making

  • Language as the code by which we operate culture

  • Money, value & exchange

  • Whether these models reveal deep truths — or fall apart in practice

Is culture measurable… or is it all nonsense?

Part 3 — Reflection (One Month Later)
At the end of your time at NS, you’ll be invited to reflect on:

  • How your country of origin shapes your worldview

  • What changed when you worked across cultural distance

  • How awareness alters behavior — individually and collectively

Why this matters

We are entering an era of Network States, remote collaboration, and global-first teams.
Understanding cultural distance is no longer optional — it’s infrastructure.

This session is both intellectual and experiential.
You won’t just learn the frameworks — you’ll feel them.
