Artist Talk: Taína Viva with Navrioska (Navrix) M³
TAÍNA VIVA: Artist Talk
Taína Viva with Navrioska (Navrix) M³ moderated by Leticia Sánchez Garris, founder of AfroHunting.
A Conversation with Navrix
Go behind the work with Navrix and moderator Leticia Sánchez Garris, founder of Afrohunting.
The conversation will explore the making of TAÍNA VIVA, from Navrix’s research into Taíno-Dominican ways of living and spirituality to her Afro-Caribbean perspective, meditative drawing practice, and fascination with the magical creatures that inhabit her work.
They will discuss how everyday observations, color, sound, movement, personal experience, and imagination become part of her creative language.
The conversation will be followed by an open Q&A and refreshments.
About the Artist in Residence
Navrioska “Navrix” Mateo Mejía is a multidisciplinary artist from La Vega, Dominican Republic, based in New York. Her work explores identity, culture, memory, and connection, often bringing together different mediums and inviting people to experience art rather than simply look at it.
During her artist residency with New Women New Yorkers (NWNY) at Governors Island, Navrix is developing Taína Viva, a new body of work rooted in ancestral memory and spirituality.
Through mixed media, sound, and movement, Taína Viva explores immigration, identity, healing, and the possibility of carrying ancestral knowledge forward while creating new forms of collective belonging.
Connecting To Self is part of this exploration. Through drawing, breath, sound, and movement, Navrix invites participants to slow down, turn inward, and explore drawing as a way of connecting with themselves and the world around them.
