About Event

Vari! Vari!!

We are excited and honored to welcome 4 members of the Noke Koî from the Nomanawa clan, joining us from the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest.

If you haven't heard of the Noke Koi people before, it's probably because they've been very immersed in the Forest. Unlike other more-known and exposed tribes, they have kept their traditions and customs to themselves for a very long time and are now starting to open up to the Western world.

100% of the tribe still speaks their mother tongue – Noke Vana – and some have slowly been learning Portuguese as a way to share their wisdom and knowledge with us, because they strongly believe the world needs indigenous knowledge in order for it to find balance and for Mother Nature to be preserved.

We will be joined by Chief Yama Nomanawa, Paje Sheka Nomanawa, Txana Ãta Nomanawa & Txana Vari Nomanawa. Vari, the Chief’s daughter, is the very first woman of the village to ever leave the region of Acre and it’s an honor to have her “força feminina” with us for the first time in Upstate New York, at Full Circle Commons.

Remembering our future is ancestral, the knowledge the Noke Koî People carry is not just from the past, but it's something that is needed now. By listening, learning, and being in right relationship, we become part of preserving these traditions and carrying them forward in a good way. They hold the understanding that the Earth is not a resource, but a living relative and that Indigenous wisdom offers ways of being that can guide us back into balance.

Join us for a more intimate evening with the wisdom they have come to share: a nurturing space rooted in storytelling, prayer, music and community where they will also be sharing one of their sacred medicines - Vashawa Hapé (the purest form of hapé from the Noke Koi people). Throughout the evening, there they will also be a small crafts market, offering handmade pieces directly from their community as a way to support the women of the village and their craft and connect with their culture.
