Moving through fear, living with risk
A lunchtime conversation with Mimi O'Handley
Around the globe the frequency and severity of wildfires, floods and storms is increasing. The threat of these extreme climate events can be a source of fear and anxiety, especially for those who have experienced them firsthand. Wildfire in particular is a climate impact that many of us in Mi’kma’ki have come to fear.
In this lunchtime conversation, Emily will invite Mimi to share her personal story of fear and loss related to climate disasters, and what she has learned about how to live in peace with the prospect of more in the future. She will also ask Mimi to share some of the perspectives she has gained from working within a national network dedicated to applying both technological solutions and Indigenous knowledge to wildfire and climate resilience.
Mimi O’Handley is Atlantic-Maritime Coordinator for the Wildfire Resilience Consortium of Canada. This unique nonprofit is creating a nationwide knowledge mobilization network and a technology and innovation accelerator, while keeping a focus on Indigenous fire stewardship and long-term land management.
Previously Mimi worked at the Ecology Action Centre, advancing holistic approaches to land and water stewardship, conservation, and biodiversity protection. Her work has focused on promoting climate change adaptation through nature-based solutions and collaborative, justice-centered policy.
Inspired by the diverse and beautiful landscapes of the Maritimes, Mimi is passionate about strengthening networks and fostering climate resilience across the Atlantic-Maritime region.
