Haunted House Architect / Ages 8-11
Get ready to become a Haunted House Architect! 🏚️👻 In this imaginative art class, we’ll explore the wonderfully spooky worlds of Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, and Barbara Cantini’s Goulia series. These artists all combine the mysterious and macabre with whimsy, humor, quirky characters, and wonderfully unusual architecture.
We’ll start by looking closely at the artists’ distinctive styles and discovering how they use line, shape, pattern, texture, and color to create their wonderfully eerie worlds. Students will experiment with cross-hatching, fine black lines, asymmetrical and crooked shapes, dramatic architecture, and whimsical details.
Then, it’s time to put our ideas into action! Each artist will design and create their own Haunted House, inspired by what we discovered. Think tall, crooked towers, crumbling walls, mysterious windows, spindly trees, secret doors, strange architectural details, and perhaps a few delightfully creepy inhabitants!
Students will work with pencil, ultra-fine black pens, colored pencils, acrylic markers and sharpies using black-and-white contrast, muted or dramatic pops of color, and intricate details to bring their haunted architecture to life.
We’ll finish with a tour Haunted House, where everyone can share their architectural creations and tell us about the strange and spooky details they dreamed up.
Please share with other families in the neighborhood that may enjoy.
