About Event

Join us for a close reading of Suzanne Césaire's 1945 essay, The Great Camouflage, the grounding text for multidisciplinary artist Tay Butler's solo exhibition, now on view at SANMAN Studios through November 29, 2026. Tay Butler: The Great Camouflage is curated by TRR HTX founder and director, Amarie Gipson.

Inspired by Suzanne Césaire's writing on self-deception, power, and colonialism, Butler draws from his two decades of military experience to explore the intersections of American empire and Black popular culture.

In addition to a collective reading of Césaire, attendees are invited to bring a text to share during literary karaoke that connects to the themes of the exhibition, including:

freedom

war

heroism

contradiction

basketball

athleticism

performance/the body

capitalism

culture

invisibility

hypervisibility

CLOSE READ is a literacy-focused program dedicated to strengthening reading comprehension, annotation and analysis skills. It's not a book club, as pre-reading is encouraged but not required. The program is designed to meet readers of all levels where they are.

Attendees are asked to bring a note-taking tool. Digital and printed copies of the text will be provided.
