(IN) PRACTICE: Poetry, Community & Art as Advocacy with Joel Leon
A conversation, guided writing workshop, and community open mic with Donovan Beck and Joél Leon.
Art has always existed at the intersection of culture, community building, and advocacy. From poetry and spoken word to the stories we share online, creators and their art have served both as a bridge and a window into how we see ourselves and others.
Join The Lighthouse’s Head of Content and author of Sunbreak: Notes on Hope, Donovan Beck, in conversation with Brooklyn-based author, poet, and Creative Director at The New York Times’ T Brand Studio, Joél Leon, for an evening exploring the relationship between art, identity, and community. Together, Donovan and Joél will discuss the role of poetry and storytelling in shaping cultural conversations, how artists find purpose through their creative practice, and the responsibility artists have to the world of advocacy across mediums
Following the conversation, guests are invited to participate in a guided poetry workshop and writing session, exploring their own experiences and perspectives through creative expression. The evening will close with an poetry open mic hosted by The lighthouse, creating space for writers, poets, and first-time storytellers to share their work with the community.
Whether you’re an established writer, or an aspiring creative this evening is the Lighthouse’s open invitation to write, listen, share, and find your place.
