About Event

Join us in the library for the first volume of our new visual literacy program, CLOSE LOOK, as we explore the work of Kerry James Marshall and center his 2016 retrospective exhibition and publication, Mastry.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Engaged in an ongoing dialogue with six centuries of representational painting, Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama) is known for his expansive body of work, which also includes drawings and sculptures. At the center of his oeuvre is the critical recognition of the conditions of invisibility long ascribed to Black figures in the Western pictorial tradition, and the creation of what he calls a "counter-archive" that brings them back into this narrative. CLOSE LOOK is a visual literacy-focused program dedicated to strengthening our collective ability to "read" images and artworks. Each program will focus on a single text (artist monograph, exhibition catalog, etc.) from the library's collection. Our goal is to equip attendees with the necessary tools to look and think critically about visual art and art history.

Attendees are asked to bring a note-taking tool.

This program will be co-facilitated by TRR HTX's team, Amarie Gipson, Aaliyah Berryman, and Ike Okoroafo.
