About Event

Emily Hyland in conversation with Shelby Hartman. What can psychedelic therapy teach us about the grief we carry—and the feelings we may not even realize we’re still holding?

Poet Emily Hyland joins Shelby Hartman, co-founder and publisher of DoubleBlind, for a conversation about psychedelic therapy, grief, memory, and the ways we learn to live with experiences that don’t have a simple resolution.

Drawing from Hyland’s new poetry collection, My Wise Little Ghost, and her own experiences with psychedelic therapy, the conversation will explore what can surface when we revisit grief from altered states of consciousness, how our relationship to loss can shift over time, and how creativity can help us process what emerges. In Hyland’s case, that journey gave voice to “who-would’ve-been-Daisy,” an emergent presence through which she begins to explore feelings surrounding an abortion many years earlier.

Together, Hyland and Hartman will consider the different ways we move through grief, the potential for psychedelic experiences to offer new perspectives on memory and emotion, and what it can mean to make space for complicated feelings rather than trying to resolve them.
