Documentary filmmakers and digital creators have traditionally occupied different corners of the storytelling world. But as the ways we make, share and discover stories continue to evolve, bringing these communities together creates an opportunity to expand not only how stories are told, but who gets to tell them.
Join Lighthouse member, Maida Lynn, independent film producer and founder of Facet, and Sonya Childress, founding Co-Executive Director of Color Congress, in conversation with Chana Ginelle Ewing, founder of culture-forward marketing and communications agency littlebigworld.
Together, they’ll share lessons from a year of marketing experiments called Elev8Docs, and explore what documentary filmmakers and creators can learn from one another, from the depth, craft and rigor of documentary practice to the experimentation, immediacy, audience connection and new formats emerging from creator-led storytelling.
How can these approaches push each other forward? What happens when creators are given more pathways into ambitious nonfiction storytelling, while filmmakers embrace new formats and ways of reaching audiences? And how can that exchange create space for a broader range of voices, perspectives and lived experiences?
Drawing on their collective work across filmmaking, impact, distribution, funding and cultural strategy, the conversation will look at how breaking down the boundaries between these worlds can lead to a more expansive storytelling ecosystem — one with more ways in, more ways to tell a story, and more people empowered to tell them.
