Fit Check: A Very Chinese Time in Your Wardrobe
For centuries, the West dressed itself in fantasies of China: silk as a symbol of the far-away, jade as a mark of mystery, the qipao as an Orientalist costume. China was something to be borrowed, imitated, and worn, rarely something allowed to define itself.
Now, the internet is doing the defining. Grandma's padded jacket is a TikTok trend. Mamianqun skirts sell out on Taobao, red string bracelets show up in fit checks, and a jade bangle is equal parts heirloom, flex, and meme. Why does "very Chinese" now read as cool? Who decides what counts as Chinese fashion: the archive, the runway, or the comment section? And what happens to tradition when it travels through the algorithm and comes back as a vibe?
Join us for a share tracing Chinese fashion from tradition to memes, from heirloom craft to viral fits, and the playful experiences that are redefining what it means to dress Chinese today. Then, a conversation with designers working across clothing, accessory, technology, and design, on Chinese aesthetics as a living language rather than a costume.
