About Event

【Event Overview /

Streaming technology continues to evolve, not only in how video is delivered, but also in how advertising is integrated, viewer experiences are enhanced, and reliable live streaming is made possible at scale.

In this edition of Tokyo Video Tech #14, we'll explore the evolution of ad insertion from CSAI and SSAI to SGAI, the application of video technology to improve advertising experiences on ABEMA, and the network architecture and operational challenges behind delivering more than 60 live streams across multiple venues at the Spring Festival in Tokyo.

Join us for an evening of technical talks, real-world engineering insights, and networking with the video engineering community in Tokyo.

This is an in-person event only (no live streaming).

【Sessions /

1️⃣ The continuing evolution of ad insertion in streaming tech: a practical guide (45 min)

※This session is available in English only.

Speaker: David Springall (Founder, YOSPACE)

Session Description:
In the beginning, there was Client-side Ad Insertion (CSAI), implemented on Flash players. Then came the “Post-PC” era and the introduction of HLS, followed by MPEG-DASH, which gave rise to Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI) and, most recently, Server-Guided Ad Insertion (SGAI).

It is not uncommon to see SGAI being regarded as doing more than it actually can. Firstly, it is not a technology, but an architectural concept, with some proprietary implementations publicised to have solved practically every streaming and advertising challenge ever presented!

For the rest of us, SGAI means what HLS and MPEG-DASH give us out of the box. In 2021, HLS v2 introduced Interstitials and, more recently in 2025, SVTA ratified MPD Alternative Events. Both mechanisms provide the ability for streamers to implement standards-based, and thus player-interoperable, linear ad insertion using an SGAI architecture. At least in theory.

So, I’ll cover what these mechanisms can do and what they actually give you, the principal benefits they deliver. Spoiler alert: these are mainly non-functional, but definitely worth having.

So how does SGAI help deliver better ad measurement, or implement non-linear ad formats such as squeezebacks? Right now, it doesn’t, but SGAI has kick-started better collaboration between the standardisation activities of ad tech and streaming tech.

How will ad measurement be standardised, and can SGAI be extended to support non-linear ads, such as squeezeback ads, natively?

You’re sold on the non-functional benefits of using SGAI, so what is the practical approach for rolling this out? Which players for HLS and MPEG-DASH are good enough for SGAI in production? Is it practical to go HLS-only for all your target device platforms?

Let’s crack open that can of worms.

Speaker Profile:
David Springall founded Yospace in 1999. Under his technical leadership, Yospace has become the global leader in Dynamic Ad Insertion for streaming video. Its technology provides a vital link between broadcast playout systems and ad platforms, enabling server-side, frame-accurate ad insertion/replacement and delivers over 10 billion advertisements per month for media companies around the world.

(30 min)

※This session is available in Japanese only.

Session Description:

Speaker Profile:

The Story of Network that Saved the Spring Festival in Tokyo (15 min)

※This session is available in Japanese only.

Session Description:

Every spring, the “Spring Festival in Tokyo,” held in Tokyo, features dozens of classical music performances across multiple venues.
However, from a live streaming perspective, the concerts are only half the story.
Behind every successful live stream lies a network infrastructure that few people notice.
I’d like to share our challenges we faced—and how we addressed them—while delivering more than 60 live streams from over 10 venues, all while keeping on-site operations to a minimum.
We’ll discuss how SEIL’s zero-configuration deployment, IPv6 connectivity, and floatlink-based VPN management contributed to the success of this project, as well as the insights we gained while preparing for potential issues—which, fortunately, never occurred.

Speaker Profile:
Joined IIJ as a sales representative in 2014; after gaining experience in streaming operations and router development, serves in both the Network and Streaming departments, where engaged in business planning and development.
