Tainà e i o u Listening Session & Conversation
Join us for an intimate listening session and conversation with Tainá e i o u, one of the most innovative voices to emerge from Brazil's new generation of experimental music.
Raised in Manaus, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, Tainá creates music that exists at the intersection of Amazonian musical traditions, contemporary jazz, improvisation and experimental composition. Her work draws on deep cultural research, weaving together ancestral rhythms such as Carimbó and Beiradão with literary reflection, sonic experimentation and an unwavering curiosity about language, memory and identity.
Her acclaimed debut album, METACOMUNICANÇÃO, was described by Brazilian experimental pioneer Tom Zé as "very courageous and experimental", calling Tainá herself "a great hope for music." The album journeys through the rich cultural landscape of the Amazon, opening with an Indigenous chant performed by Tikuna artist Mepaeruna alongside a twelve tone piano composition interpreted by maestro Hilo Carriel. Throughout the record, Portuguese and Nheengatu, one of Brazil's most historically significant Indigenous languages, sit alongside the sounds and rhythms that surrounded Tainá while growing up in Amazonas, creating a work that feels at once deeply rooted and strikingly contemporary.
Across the evening, we will listen to METACOMUNICANÇÃO together, in its intended sequence, pausing between tracks for a conversation with Tainá about the stories, ideas and lived experiences that shaped the music. Together we'll explore ancestry, language, cultural inheritance, improvisation, belonging and the dialogue between tradition and artistic innovation.
The conversation extends far beyond the artist. Everyone in the room is invited to become part of the dialogue, bringing their own reflections, questions and experiences into the space. The album serves as a starting point for a wider conversation about what it means to inherit culture, to carry memory, to search for identity and to navigate the universal experiences that connect us all. Some of the richest moments often emerge not from the stage, but from the unexpected connections made between strangers through listening together. This is an evening built on curiosity, there are no right interpretations, only the opportunity to listen deeply, reflect honestly and discover new perspectives through one another.
Fresh from performances across Brazil, Portugal, Morocco and Italy, Tainá e i o u joins us for a rare opportunity to experience one of the most exciting voices in contemporary Brazilian music through conversation, collective listening and shared human experience.
