About Event

Cartography of Memory is a participatory movement workshop exploring how memory, identity, home, and belonging live in the body.

Working individually and in pairs, participants move through guided prompts with simple sheets of white paper, transforming them into sculptures, stages, bodies, borders, archives, things too tender to say aloud, and encounters between inner worlds. Open to all backgrounds, the workshop focuses on presence, listening, curiosity, and communal care.

Participants may be invited to continue with the project as it develops into future performance, film, installation, and interdisciplinary forms.

About the Artist:

Jianing Zhao (she/her) is an interdisciplinary movement, theater, and visual artist from Hangzhou, now based in Harlem.

Drawing from backgrounds in pole, aerial, contact improv, contemporary dance, parkour, martial arts, dabke, ballroom, and freestyle skiing, she excavates personal and collective archives to create new embodied mythologies.

Her work has been presented across diverse venues, such as TheaterLab, Theater Mitu, Theatre 154, Chain Theatre, Princeton Art Museum, Cornell, Columbia, NYU, CultureLab LIC, Clubland Gallery, Auburn Correctional Facility, Room 52, KGB Bar, Vogue Italia, and Cracow Fashion Week.
