About Event

As computers have gotten faster and internet infrastructure has developed, web sites have gotten larger and larger. Some popular sites require megabytes or 10s of megabytes just for a simple page of text and images.

The "typical" user — someone with a fast internet connection and the most up to date hardware and software — may be able to view these sites with no problems. But many users are "atypical", whether they are at a coffee shop, in a rural area, at any other place with unstable internet, or whether they are using old or non-standard hardware.

How can we develop websites in a way that serves users at the margins? How can we make a website resilient to infrastructural instability and limited resources?

This talk and workshop will go over some of the motivations for making websites small as well as some tips to build a website that can enter 512KB club (no affiliation). Come with an existing website you want to slim down, or build a new light site from scratch!

Your host will be alex, an engineer, creative technologist, and proud member of the 512KB club.
