Remembering Life in Times of Loss: film screening & inquiry
Remembering Life in Times of Loss: film screening & inquiry - January 26, 7- 9 PM
How do we keep our hearts tender and our souls alive, despite the accelerating loss of familiar species, landscapes, and lifeways?
Global warming and habitat loss are often portrayed as something that happens out there. Yet, these times of profound change in which we find ourselves also mean a fading away of the familiar nearby. In Germany, the beech trees are ill. In our lifetime, they will likely leave for colder, wetter climates further north. Meanwhile, the nightingale is slowly disappearing from England's last remaining forests and pastoral landscapes. It is in this context that folksinger and song collector Sam Lee asks: What would happen if we no longer heard the call of this beloved bird?
On January 26, 2026, we will gather at C-Space to watch the inspiring film "The Nightingale's Song" together, produced by Emergence Magazine, about Sam Lee's work and art. As Emerence writes about the film: "In The Nightingale’s Song, we meet Sam Lee, a folk singer who draws on an ancient lineage of traditional folk music as he joins this elusive bird in spontaneous song. Through his practice of devotion to the nightingale, Sam opens a pathway into a deepening relationship of care, stewardship, and love with these songbirds and the living world we share."
After the screening, facilitator and communications designer Niels Devisscher will guide us into a conversation, in which we will weave the threads of our own belonging to place, our relationship to the loss and grief we may feel when that which we love falls away, and the inevitable joy we may begin to cultivate from a deepened relationship with the natural world. Join us if you are in for an intimate fireside conversation in the midst of winter: a time for slowness, reflection, and connection.
This event opens a forthcoming series of online and in-person events called "The Sensorium", offered by the multi-species experience and design lab, Sympoiesis. The Sensorium invites participants-in-place to come together, and inquire into how our places are shape-shifting and undergoing profound change. As Niels argues, "We are part of a sensorium where everything perceives everything else through constant engagement with sense organs. It is through sensuous perception that the world reveals itself to and through us, and important information becomes knowable. When we come together in community to exchange about what we have seen, heard, smelled, or felt, we become conscious of the sensorium. We create a space in which we can co-develop adequate responses to a changing landscape." Subscribe to the newsletter to learn more about upcoming gatherings.
