You and Whose Army?
Does form follow function?
'You and Whose Army?' events are coffee shop-style get togethers; open conversations for writers and publishers at any stage of their career. We get together monthly to discuss current topics in writing and publishing, and share ideas. The name comes from the idea that we may be small (small presses, small in number or going it alone), but united we are mighty.
On 10th September we will talk about form and function.
‘Form follows function’ is a design principle particularly associated with late 19th and early 20th Century industrial architecture and design. It states that the appearance and structure of a building (or object) should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.
If we think about that in terms of writing then that means, if you pick up a novel then you expect certain things: a particular length, a particular arc, a specific reading experience.
So, let’s discuss:
*What are our expectations as readers when we pick up a volume of poetry versus a novel, for example?
*If we imagine a world where there are no genres or labels, then what do readers look for instead?
*As writers - how does thinking of form and function limit us as we sit down to write. Or does it help to set parameters?
*As independent or self-publishers, how can we think about form and function as a way to connect writers with readers' interests?
MOB will provide the publisher's perspective and then we will open the floor to questions and conversation.
All are welcome at these events, you don't need to be currently writing or publishing - just interested in the topic on the table. So, grab your favourite drink, settle in, and get ready for a thoughtful hour of conversation and discovery!
After the event we will provide a recording and a round-up of tips and topics covered, so you can refer back to anything that was helpful and useful.
FYI: The event will be recorded and attendees will be added to the Modern Odyssey Books Substack subscriber list, so that you will be automatically updated about future 'You and Whose Army?' events.
