About Event

To celebrate Earth Day, Mt. View Sanitary District is hosting a panel discussion on how climate factors shape wastewater facility operations and how facilities can prepare for climate-related challenges.

Following the panel discussion, MVSD will host an tour of its facility and Moorhen Marsh, the first wetlands on the West Coast to use treated wastewater as its primary water source.

In addition to MVSD, the panel will feature Dr. Lorien Fono, Executive Director at Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA) and Jeff Alvarez, Founder and Wildlife Biologist at The Wildlife Project.

Fono has been with BACWA since 2016 and has served as Executive Director since 2020. Fono holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Engineering from UC Berkeley, where she researched emerging wastewater-derived contaminants, and is a licensed PE. Fono also serves as the Treasurer for the San Francisco Estuary Institute.

Alvarez founded The Wildlife Project in 1990. The company specializes in NEPA and CEQA environmental compliance and technical field surveys, and has been working to protect native species at Moorhen Marsh for over a decade. In addition to his role at The Wildlife Project, Alvarez is a board member for the Biological Field Studies Association.

***All attendees interested in touring the facility will be required to fill out a liability release form. Forms can be requested prior to the event or completed day-of at the facility.
