Gift giving can be a beautiful way to show our love and care, but it can also be stressful. And expensive. And wasteful!
We’re offering an alternative. All of us have possessions lying around and collecting dust, but that may be the perfect gift for someone else. Bring these items to our Holiday Gift Swap-Shop, and then explore what other people brought. In one afternoon, walk away with a gift for your bestie, nephew, mother-in-law, lawyer, and therapist, all without spending any money. And make a few friends while doing it.
🙋What happens?
We’ll have a team of volunteers who will process any donation you bring and organize the space. Peruse the offerings of your fellow community members. If you find something that makes you think “I know just the person who would love this!” then take it to our gift wrapping station, where you can wrap and decorate your gift. We’ll also have an art table where you can create gifts on the spot! It’s a hangout! Settle in and make friends.
🙋What should I bring?
You don’t have to bring anything! But this is an opportunity to regift items that didn’t quite enter your heart, or to send possessions onto a new life where they might find more love. Trinkets, tchotchkes, books, jewelry, pottery, mugs, scarves, hats, purses, sweaters, roller skates. Items in great condition only–this is not scrap or a salvage yard. We will refuse items that don’t meet this bar. Early drop-offs! Can’t attend? Want to help make the event a success? 🙋 Does it cost money?
No, the gift swap is free! Isn’t that thrilling? But if you get thirsty or hungry, we encourage you to patronize The Fold’s cafe.
🙋 Is this a gift exchange, like a white elephant party?
Not quite. You’re not giving or receiving gifts at the event. You’re exchanging items that you’re turning into gifts for your loved ones.
🙋 Is this a clothing swap?
While we typically host clothing swaps, this event is a little different. Bring clothing if you think it would make for a great holiday gift!
🙋 Why are you doing this?
This is our own gift to the community. We regularly host clothing swaps and love how the sharing economy gives stories to our possessions. With this holiday swap, we are bringing this same philosophy to the most high-consumption time of the year.
