About Event

Welcome to the first-ever Apolune Film Festival!

Apolune is a Vancouver production house and creative collective founded by local indie filmmakers Ansel Tan and Britney Kam. We know first-hand how much talent this city holds, because we’re building our careers here, making movies alongside the people who live and work in it. And we know the best thing we can do with that talent is make stories together and put them in front of an audience.

But Vancouver doesn’t have enough events built for independent filmmakers. So we thought: what better way to stoke community than to start one ourselves!

  • Local indie films on the big screen. Work from Vancouver’s emerging and seasoned filmmakers, all in one room.

  • Crash Test Cinema. The 2027 cohort’s films, made by first-time filmmakers through CiTR 101.9FM’s mobile filmmaking programme

  • The world premiere of THE ANGEL LIBERTY, the proof-of-concept for Apolune’s upcoming feature film, CONTRADANCE

  • A raffle, a mixer with local filmmakers, and a whole lot of food.

Come to watch. Come to meet the people making films in this city. Come to see what happens when a community of indie filmmakers finally gets a night of its own.

We can’t wait to see you there!

***
This year’s theme, adapted from our motto, is STORIES FROM THE FAR POINT.

In astronomy, the APOLUNE is the farthest point in a satellite's orbit around the moon. We imagine the APOLUNE to be a place of the cutting-edge. It is ambitious yet sombre, wondrous yet difficult: a testament to the turn of a life of creation.

Nobody asked us to make these films. No one is waiting for them. And still we can’t not make them.

The far point is where the budget ends and the story doesn’t: past the odds, past anyone’s permission, out where the work is its own reason. Every film in this room was made there, on borrowed gear, in borrowed light, with friends who said yes.

This festival is for the people who live out there, in the far point. We’ll be watching, will you?

***

All proceeds from this festival go towards funding Apolune's next in-house feature, CONTRADANCE.

The festival is run in partnership with our friends at CiTR 101.9FM, UBC’s campus radio station. Apolune is a mentorship and equipment sponsor of Crash Test Cinema.
