Competing Perspectives on AI and Employment: Collapse and Evolution
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence is introducing a new layer of uncertainty into one of the most basic parts of modern life: how we work, earn, and create value.
Some analysts warn of a coming “productivity shock”, where AI-driven efficiencies lead to widespread job displacement and cascading disruption across industries. Others point to a longer pattern of creative destruction, where technological change ultimately creates new kinds of work. Still others reference "the singularity" and claim AI is a fundamentally different kind of technology that doesn't obey historical patterns.
In this session, we’ll explore these apparently competing perspectives on AI and economic disruption. Drawing on ideas from diverse fields, we’ll look at the assumptions behind each view before moving into a more open, structured conversation.
In group discussion, we’ll consider policy approaches and what these futures might mean for our own careers, communities, and sense of stability. If you’re interested in thinking more deeply about the future of work in the age of AI alongside thoughtful, curious New Yorkers, we’d love to have you join.
This session is hosted by Tusk & Quill, a publication and events platform exploring how we 'live well' in America today.
